Agua Negra
A Week Worth Waiting For
Week 13 brought Jeffrey, David, Leigh, and Randy to Agua Negra.
Jeff and Dave have been close friends for many years. Randy had spent several years waiting for the opportunity to experience Tsimane, while Leigh’s journey carried a different weight: after an accident, he spent three years recovering before finally being able to make the trip.
The week rewarded the wait.
The group completed two overnight camps at Agua Negra, made the Chimoro hike, landed three pacú, and enjoyed excellent dorado opportunities throughout the trip.
Randy would take the largest dorado of the week after a very short cast beside structure, while both he and Leigh experienced memorable pacú encounters on the surface.

Weather remained excellent for almost the entire week, with plenty of sun and very little rain. Only one approaching storm brought a temporary drop in temperature, while overall conditions remained highly favorable.
The rivers stayed in good shape throughout the week, allowing the group to fish a variety of environments and techniques. Pacú activity was particularly strong during periods of surface feeding, while dorado continued to provide consistent opportunities across the system. The lower Sécure also began to reveal more defined channels as levels remained low, opening up more opportunities to fish sections on foot.
Catch of the Week
Out of the Structure
Randy landed the largest dorado of the week while the group was moving upstream toward the Agua Negra camp.
The opportunity came quickly.
A very short cast landed beside a piece of structure, and the dorado exploded almost directly from the wood to attack the fly.
The take, the proximity, and the fight that followed turned a brief window into one of the week’s defining encounters.
Memorable Moments
A Dry-Fly Pacú Before the Storm
With wind building and a storm approaching, pacú began feeding actively across the surface.
Randy found one of them.
Using a dry fly, he managed to fool a fish during a period of intense surface activity, turning a changing weather moment into one of the standout catches of the week.
The Pacú Leigh Had Been Waiting For
Leigh had spent years watching videos and imagining the possibility of eventually catching one himself.
This week, he finally got the opportunity.
A large pacú was feeding on leaves at the surface, and Leigh was able to convert the chance into the fish he had been hoping for long before he ever reached Tsimane.
After three years of recovery before making the trip, the moment carried an obvious significance beyond the catch itself.
Upper Sécure with Dave and Jeff
Dave and Jeff enjoyed an exceptional day on the Upper Sécure, working wood, structure, and defined holding water.
The conditions allowed them to explore these environments effectively and find repeated opportunities among the structure, adding a more technical and intimate style of fishing to an already varied week.
The Week at Agua Negra
Week 13 combined stable rivers, strong dorado opportunities, active pacú, two camps, and the Chimoro hike.
As the Sécure remained low, its channels became increasingly defined, creating more opportunities to move through sections on foot and fish the river by wading.
For a group that included anglers who had waited years to make the journey, the week delivered exactly what they had come looking for: varied water, quality fish, and plenty of reasons to remember the trip long after leaving the river.
