A Week Ruled by Pacú

Week 13 welcomed five first-time guests from the United States, four men and one woman, Cecily, who would return home with the only Grand Slam of the week.

That was only one of many highlights that kept surfacing throughout a week filled with laughter, wildlife encounters, stories born from our close connection with the Tsimane communities, and fishing situations that once again revealed the extraordinary contrasts of jungle fly fishing.

The numbers alone were remarkable: ten pacú between 10 and 16 pounds, three of them landed by Reynolds in a single day, one on a surface fly. Cecily, meanwhile, completed her Grand Slam far upstream in the crystal-clear waters of the Upper Sécure during a day that also produced around 15 dorado.

Weather

The week began under stable conditions typical for this point in the season. On Monday, however, rising temperatures and persistent wind triggered a noticeable increase in pacú activity. Reynolds took full advantage, landing three pacú in a single day, while Cecily added another during her long walk upstream with Nick, the fish that completed her Grand Slam in the clear waters of the Upper Sécure.

Water

Midweek, a strong morning rain slightly altered both water clarity and river level. The change was brief and never became an obstacle. Fishing remained consistently productive, with a strong average of opportunities and catches throughout the week. That included both tributaries, Ashahana and Maniquicito, two small and delicate systems that again proved how much variety exists within the broader Sécure fishery.

Catch of the Week

Ten Pacú in One Week

This time, Catch of the Week belongs not to a single fish, but to an extraordinary pattern that defined the entire trip.

By the end of the week, our guests had landed ten pacú, all between 10 and 16 pounds.

For a species that demands patience, precision, and often a very different approach from dorado fishing, that number speaks for itself.

From surface takes to deeper presentations, pacú became one of the defining characters of Week 13 and gave the group a succession of encounters that would be difficult to reproduce on demand.

Memorable Moments

Cecily’s Grand Slam

Far upstream in the Upper Sécure, Cecily completed the week’s only Grand Slam: dorado, pacú, and yatorana.

The achievement came during a remarkably active day that produced around 15 dorado, turning one long walk through crystal-clear water into one of the most complete fishing days of the week.

A Grand Slam in itself would have been enough.

This one came surrounded by action.

Three Pacú in One Day

Reynolds built his own remarkable chapter.

During a day of intense pacú activity, he landed three fish, including one on a surface fly.

Three pacú in one session is already unusual. Adding a surface take made the day even more memorable and reinforced just how dominant the species had become throughout Week 13.

The Week at Sécure

Week 13 delivered a rare concentration of pacú, a Grand Slam, long walks into the Upper Sécure, strong dorado numbers, and productive fishing across the tributaries.

It was a week with enough action to stand on numbers alone.

And yet, somewhere between the fishing, the conversations, and a deeper curiosity about the Amazon and its people, it also became one of those weeks whose full measure extends beyond anything we can put into a report.
